Critical Security Alert: Microsoft Fixes 8 IE Holes to Counter Public Exploits January 25, 2010
As reported in the media, Microsoft has released a critical patch for Internet Explorer to combat the security issue that was directly targeted in the recent China-based attacks on Google and other U.S. firms. The security issue, detailed in Microsoft Security Advisory 979352, impacts all supported releases of Internet Explorer, including IE 5, 6, 7, and 8. The vulnerability can allow an attacker to install malicious software on an IE user’s computer by luring the user to a website that hosts malware designed to exploit the vulnerability. The attacker would have the ability to take complete control of any infected computer. ADNET recommends that all users of Internet Explorer apply the update immediately using update management tools or by checking for updates using the Microsoft Update service. ADNET also recommends that once the patch has been installed, users upgrade to Internet Explorer 8.0. “At this point, Internet Explorer 6, which many people are still using, is almost 10 years old”, says Tim Weber, Manager of Infrastructure Services at ADNET. “We recommend our clients upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, IE 8, for the latest foundation of browser security.” If you have any questions about this security risk, ADNET can help.
